Paul Jennings

With a 20 year career that spans all aspects of the communications mix I take great pleasure in helping organisations identify and tell their stories in a way that creates genuine engagement, motivates action, and makes a tangible contribution to my client's achieving their business goals and vision.

I served my apprenticeship at the coal face of British public relations working on a wide range of consumer and B2B accounts from niche start-ups to British Telecom and Anderson Legal. In a time when digital media was just a twinkle in the entrepreneur's eye the traditional media was king - hooks and relationships ruled. Not much has changed in that aspect, but now we also have the luxury of balancing third party endorsement with our own direct communications.

A stint as Internal Communications Manager at Wal-Mart fired up a passion for operational an crisis communications that I enjoy exercising to this day. It's where I also learned about the power of internal culture and a shared  vision that supercharges an organisation towards success. It's an area of communication I still very much enjoy working in.

Following a relocation to New Zealand I took the opportunity to spend six years working in local government communication for several unitary and territorial authorities. Community engagement strategy around Long Term and Annual planning processes was balanced with the day to day need to communicate operational information in a timely and accurate way that also helped create a sense of place and value in services that are very often taken for granted. 

In 2013 I came full circle and co-founded a communications agency called UpShift that would allow me to focus on my passions of outdoor activity, tourism and helping young organisations plan for and achieve success through thoughtful communications strategy - from brand development right through to crisis management. I'm still proud to be joint owner of this agency.
